Hugo Ñopo
Senior Economist, Poverty and Equity Practice Group, World Bank
Hugo Ñopo is a Senior Economist for the Poverty and Equity Practice Group at the World Bank. In multilaterals, he has previously served as Regional Economist at the International Labor Organization and as Lead Education Economist at the Inter-American Development Bank. He has also been a Senior Researcher at GRADE, in his native Peru. There, he has conducted studies for the ILO, IADB, OECD, UNESCO, UNDP, UNFPA, and the World Bank, among others. During his days in academia, he was an Assistant Professor at Middlebury College and published extensively on a variety of topics in academic journals, books, and different outlets. His recent efforts have also been devoted to outreach and dissemination through opinion columns and TED talks. Currently, he is also a research affiliate at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Bonn, Germany. Among others, he has served on the board of the Network of Inequality and Poverty (NIP), as president of the Peruvian Economic Association (APE) and as an elected board member of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association (LACEA). Hugo holds a Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern University, a M.Sc. in mathematical economics from the Instituto de Matematica Pura e Aplicada, and two B.S. degrees, one in engineering from the Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria and one in mathematics from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru.
