Sunil Herat is an Associate Professor in Waste Management and Circular Economy at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. He is the Program Director of the Master of Environmental Engineering and Pollution Control. He is a member of the Expert Subsidiary Group of Regional 3R and Circular Economy Forum of Asia and the Pacific, managed by the United Nations Centre for Regional Development. A/Prof Herat has over 30 years of experience in waste management, particularly on issues and challenges related to waste management and circular economy in developing and emerging economies. He is an expert on training programs in municipal solid waste management, hazardous waste management, cleaner production and eco-efficiency, and circular economy. He has extensive experience training waste management professionals in the Asia Pacific region. He has conducted training and capacity-building programs in Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Thailand, and Pacific Islands (Fiji). He has conducted several Australia Awards Fellowships programs for Vietnam (Promoting GHG Emission Reductions Vietnamese Waste Sector, Developing the Financing of Waste Management through Private Sector Engagement in Vietnam, Leadership program for Resource Efficient, Zero Waste Societies in Vietnam) and Indonesia (Renewable Energy Technologies including Waste to Energy Waste to Energy, Tackling Marine Pollution issues through Recycling). He also conducted a biannual Regional Train-the-Trainer Program on Regional Solid and Hazardous Waste Management for various participants from Pacific Island Countries. He is also actively involved in revising environmental regulations related to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in Vietnam. He has contributed to several United Nations publications including GEO 6, Global E-waste Monitor 2024, and 2nd State of 3Rs in Asia Pacific.
